The guys at this site wrote some kinda GPT/MBR cloning script, I don’t know how often it updates (not often enough since it’s taking an awfully long time to reach a point where I can install Acronis), so I don’t know how old it is.

I’m currently cloning Windows 7 64-bit. I had an Ubuntu dual-boot on this system, but I eventually removed it because I had to run Windows only and Ubuntu became a burden. It has been running perfectly for 3 years now and so far I have no problems. I don’t use the partition manager, I use Windows’ Disk Management, and I resize the disk to the free space after shrinking the partition containing Windows, so it is actually 40 GB free after shrinking the disk.

Did anybody have problems when updating to Windows10? In Acronis Disk Director, i had problems when doing a sdb disk clone from two windows 10 boxes (it just mess things up) and could only use Acronis Disk Director Ultimate. It seems that later on Acronis Disk Director Ultimate could not read some of the sectors on the first disk (sdc), so after mounting it on both OS, I had a lot of metadata missing, like video rips, photos, music and stuff. I guess it’s because Windows10 ‘discover’ those sectors… Would be nice to see a fix for this, before I convert to Acronis Disk Director Ultimate. (Using a temporary rootfs iso at the moment). Whoever would insist on using Acronis DD2011 or this year’s DD2016 does not realize what is involved in making an image of a system, then creating and testing the backup, then restoring the image. For an individual it is just not practical to do this unless they are very experienced and certain that the systems will back-up without any potential problems. For this individual, it is also not really necessary to go thru such rigmarole and effort for backing up data, and prefer to simply make a copy of a drive, and keep it off-site in the cloud, or in a 3rd party service, which in most cases, is more easily set-up and less likely to fail than the Acronis “AI” program.

One of the biggest benefits of Disk Director 2012 which I haven’t tried is the fact that it can be used to analyze and optimize disks. I am hoping there is a solution to the problem of Disk Director claiming GPT disks are not supported but you can see this video which is a fair indication that Disk Director can convert disks to GPT and vice versa using the bcd command available on its own page. However, the only section of this video I can find on the Disk Director site is the section which explains the Boot Camp option which is useful. My issues are more with how (if at all) Disk Director can analyse and optimize free space on GPT disks.

Are there any versions of Disk Director that will let you convert a disk from MBR to GPT or vice versa?
When I try using bcd /dev/sdb2 to convert a MBR disk to GPT, Disk Director says that it cannot perform the conversion. I also tried using bcd /dev/sdb2 -g and still did not succeed.

Had a run through the bcd -h output and found the command I was looking for, but no matter how much I try, I can’t seem to convert the disk to GPT. I get errors such as:
‘The disk 0x00 cannot be converted to a GPT disk!
‘(Error: GPT size calculation unsuccessful,’
‘Optional GPT size is 0x0, try the ‘-s’ option.)

I went straight back to the operating system I already had because I had been waiting for Acronis to write to me and they haven’t done anything. I was very lucky to have found this website because I no longer have access to my hard drive.

I am appalled at the lack of response I’ve received from Acronis to my many emails asking what has happened to my hard drive that I had to buy a new one and the cost and time I’ve wasted trying to recover this software which should have been easy.
